In high school i knew exactly who i was, who i wanted to be when i grew up and what i was going to do with my life.
one thing i knew for sure was that i absolutely loathed and despised the "hobby" of reading. i couldnt understand how someone could just sit there and read a whole book...from start to finish! crazies. well every summer since i can remember we had to "read" books and then take a test on the book once the school year started. somehow i managed to only kinda read the book, and somehow pass the test. there were so many other, much more betta things i could do with my time. i could go for a run, talk on the phone, walk around the house, pluck my eyebrows, or mow that lawn for heavens sake, but who in their right mind would voluntarily sit on the couch or in a cozy chair and just read....for fun? this concept was rather foreign to me. well one summer somehow my mom found out, it was the day before school started, she bought me the book on tape for "the hobbit" she told me to follow along in my book- (not that i cant read, i just didnt WANT to) and sorry for all you tolkein lovers, but barf. my mom told me i wasnt allowed to leave my room or do anything til it was done. several hours later, after shifting positions millions of times, looking at the clock every few minutes i pushed pause, looked back and forth down the hall to make sure she wasnt spying on me making sure i was "reading" i ran to the bathroom, then came back(im obedient) and had to endure several more hours of the grueling semi british accent of the man reading to me i might have fallen asleep several times but dont tell. I swore up and down i would never read another book again unless i absolutely had to (aside from the standard works of course).
well my life has definitely turned out very different than i had planned from when i was in highschool. but i love my life. much more so than if i had followed that plan. anyway things have changed, i have grown and somewhat matured. i have the sweetest job. i work at a doctors office, doing their lab work. more often than not it is buttfreakin slow. so to soothe my bored out of my wits mind i do lots of stuff, which i have already blogged about... ie seasons of tv shows, learning to crochet, and gasp-reading!
the book has to be interesting-obviously or i will quit reading it 50 pages into it. but recently i have been introduced to some awesome books! i read the first two of the Hunger Games in about 4 days (i highly recommend them)too bad the dang third one doesnt come out til aug. and as of the last week or so i have downed yes downed 3 of mary higgens clarks books. im dying to borrow more (my mom has a library of em) she is an awesome writer and definitely keeps my attention. guess what - i have learned to LOVE to read! sometimes i feel bad if someone is trying to Gchat with me-or worse when the hub calls me on the phone.and i am so engulfed in the book that i either dont respond or respond with one or two word answers. i become so enthralled with the story that now i know how people can like to sit and read a book, it takes me to a different world (like a movie but better). one thing i find funny tho- is i only read at work. i refuse to take my book home for fear i will neglect the hubs. so i force myself back to reality at 530 every day. but id say 5-8 hours of reading could be considered a little excessive, but when i am getting paid to do it. SURE~ give me a good book! oh and if anyone has any good suggestions let me at it! (but no tolkein please)
Reading is so much better when you aren't forced to read boring "school required" books! I read every day at lunch, and like you, don't ever take my book home. But I do love that mid-day escape to another place and time.
ReplyDeleteI'm working on The Undaunted right now, which is HUGE, but really interesting. So, if your looking for a giant pioneer book to fill your time, maybe check that one out!
